Simple One Light Setup

Sometimes you need to get back to the basics when it comes to photography to really understand it. On Friday I had the opportunity to show a extremely talented budding photographer some studio lighting. While having a bunch of fancy equipment can make the job easier, its always nice to do simple set ups to show how things look and work.

This is a one light setup, bounced into an umbrella, camera right, above and pointed down 45 degrees. While this is a pretty basic lighting set up and you can also add two more lights, one for fill on the left and another hair light behind and to the left to seperate your model from teh backdrop a little more. A couple updates for you all

I have been pretty busy with work and photography and thought I’d give a quick update to what I have been up to lately.

1. Product photography – I have been doing a lot of this lately and while its hard to post just photos of products for you to look at, I have updated my “print and online” gallery with those that are currently being used.

2. Corporate Headshots – This winter season has seen a LOT of corporate headshots and I have been busy mostly with that. Having a good headshot to use on your company wbsite or even Linkedin is important and poeople are starting to see the benefit of having one to use. I will be offering a discounted package for headshots in my studio shortly, please keep a look out for that.

3. Hair Ungplugged Club – I recently joined up with a new group of hair stylists and makeup artists to help each other out with networking and building portfolios. We had our first group workshop this past weekend, I will be uploading some photos from there to show what everyone created.

4. Personal Projects – Finally we get to the last of what I have been up to this winter season and that is my personal project photographing dogs. No owners were allowed, just dogs. I am still in the middle of this project and hope to keep it going. My next phase of the projeect will in home pictures. I am open to all pets so if you’re interested, send me an email!

New location scouting!

ATTENTION!! Looking for unique new places to shoot indoors for the coming months and following year. You will be COMPENSATED UP TO $150 or more for a couple hours of shooting depending on the location. I will also get some shots of just the inside for reference which you can use if you ever decide to sell. You don’t need to do anything except to have it clean. This is what I’m looking for, preferably city locations but not limited to…

- Ultra modern home, minimalist design, clean lines, etc
- Highrise, concrete walls, wood/concrete floors, floor to ceiling windows.
- Older building, brownstone thats been kept up
- Loft with exposed brick, wood beams
- Modern kitchen with high end appliances

I recently picked up a used Fuji X100. This camera has great classic look with the insides of your regular DSLR. It is one focal length only but I normally work with primes anyway so this doesnt bother me.

I have started a new gallery just for this new camera is it will be used as more of my walk around creative camera verses my larger ones for commerical and paid jobs. Look for it to be used on shoots as well!

Its been a while since I have updated. Mostly because I have been so busy with work and shooting every weekend for the Fall season and editing on week nights. I rarely, if ever show behind the scenes photos of hair and makeup prep. Not because Im trying to hide any big secret but because I never think to show it!

Theres always a lot of laughing during these “down times” for me and its a great time to get to know everyone thats involved.
